Medieval sound studies have often explored the premodern world in terms of hearing and listening, the animal world, or music. This session seeks papers that investigate the production and reproduction of soundscapes in medieval epic literature in diverse romance languages.Working with Murray’s notion of the soundscape–a notion that puts the aural and the spatial together as structuring each other–this session seeks papers that investigate soundscapes in medieval romance epic, looking to contrast and compare different literary and scholarly traditions. We encourage participants to think of spaces in epic marked by specific sounds, such as the space of battle or of the court, that of the war council or of the feast, as complex constructions in which the aural dimension as a whole, and not only the oral, plays a major role.
Note: This will be atraditional, in person session with no hybrid option.
