An intellectual and literary tradition that lasted about one hundred years, it had an enormous impact on early Spanish literature, populating the collective poetic tradition with a series of literary structures and tropes that have haunted Spanish literature up to the present day. This session will exam the ground-breaking nature of the poetic form, its innovative topics, tropes, and structures, and its messages, both didactic and entertaining. This session would accept papers that re-examine the poetic form in terms of modern literary analysis, perhaps breaking with the past and traditional readings of this poetic form, reframing the “Mester de Clerecia” as subversive, subtle, and unorthodox.
