We invite proposals for contributions to a roundtable. During our field’s evolution, scholars proposed terms that subsequent generations have adopted, reconsidered, and displaced. This roundtable considers inherited terminology previously deemed useful that has become unsettling. “Convivencia,” “reconquista,” “sentimental romance,” “Iberia,” even “medieval” are notable —and perhaps not yet settled— past examples. Contributors will choose some term, title, or chronology that is central to their work and reflect on these questions: What does this term do for our field? How has it advanced your own work? How is it limiting? What would our field look like if we thought around or beyond it —if we “unsettled” it?
