In an age in which the critical edition dominates literary analysis and is, more often than not, the first kind of interaction any given reader has with a medieval Iberian text, this panel invites reflection on the role that direct engagement with the manuscript (or facsimile) plays in modern scholarship. We also ask how the study of material realities can affect, transform, or influence analyses of the literary texts. Additionally, we seek to reflect on the inherent difficulties of this kind of study, from access to materials to specialized academic training to other challenges.
